CEGUERA

Puedo leer tu mente,
Soy el que dicta las reglas,
Tratando con locos
Puedo engañarte como a un ciego
Y no necesito verte más
Para saber que puedo leer tu mente.”

BLINDNESS

-      “I’ll never forget your voice!
-      And I’ll never forget your face!”

This short exchange of words hit me like an uppercut the first time I heard it and still does each time I read it again.

Where is the strength of this dialogue? How can it be that sharp, so threatening? Why does it smash my face that way?
I have been racking my brain over and over again since then, trying to find an explanation for my Cartesian mind and I think that the context is the key.
Unaware of it, these sentences could as well be lovers words, whispered to somebody’s ear. But it is not the case. It is a threat, a real threat.

They belong to the script of “Blindness” – from José Saramago (1998 Nobel Prize for Literature) novel – a very poignant book and a very rough movie… who talks about the responsibility to have eyes when others have lost them.

But let’s come back to the meaning of the sentences. Let’s start with “face”; a means of identification. It is easier, for me at least, to remember a face rather than a voice, but hold on a second, they do not mention the verb “remember” they use the verb “forget” instead. So which one is stronger: to remember or to forget? They are antonyms; the first one has to power to memory, the second one loses the remembrance.

What about the word “voice”? What about a sound? A voice is easy to imitate. Identification is doubtlessly more powerful than a sound, and what if the two characters of the dialogue are both blind? What if we rewrite the sentences that way:
-      “I will always remember your voice!
-      And I will always remember your face!”

The threat is still here, and knowing we are talking about blind people who have problems to identify, it is easier to understand where the threat comes from.
The oddness is that the blind will not express themselves this way.
How can they use an expression referring to sight and identification such as: “I will never forget your face!”

Let me tell you something; I am a shortsighted woman, a really shortsighted one, and consequently it might be a bit easier to me to imagine how terrifying blindness can be, not only for people who are born blind but also for those you can go blind.

Darkness! I imagine blindness as a lack of light, thus dark. But what if it is a white blindness, like being blinded by a light, an exorbitant light, something as white as milk?
And what if everybody around you goes blind? Unthinkable! And what if you are the only one who can see? Terrifying! The only one sentenced to see when nobody else can.

Close your eyes and imagine the thing: no more faces, no more colors, no difference between day and night, the lost of time notion, the impossibility to find things, not only objects but intangible things such as to find one’s way, the difficulty to move with thousand obstacles in your way, your hands and your voice being your only tools. That is my description of a nightmare!

In my own opinion the threat, here, comes from the word “face”: our face is what makes us different from one another, it is our own identification. The blind can only imagine faces as a sighted person can see them; no way to hide even quiet and in silence, the weird sensation of being observed and weak.

So let me put an end to that post with the lyrics of Alan Parsons’ Projects:

I am the eye in the sky, looking at you
I can read your mind
I am the maker of rules,
Dealing with fools
I can cheat you blind
And I don’t need to see anymore
To know that I can read your mind”.

LAPICES

PENCILS

Is there anything weird about the fact that I like to sharpen pencils? Or about the fact that I like pencils and want to write something about them?
And after all why not? “Nothing Special” is my blog and my space so I am free to use it as I please for any purpose I want.

Good, at this point I already have captured your attention and you have probably been looking around to find a pencil on your desk, as we all do have pencils on our desks.
You might as well not use them – what a shame – but we all have those “wooden sticks” somewhere at home.

As far as I’m concerned I like them, and I like having them properly sharpened and standing like little soldiers in their container. I like to use them in my everyday life for making lists or capturing an idea and keeping words on a sheet of paper, a post-it or a pad.

A pencil is something great, something necessary, and if we come to talk about color pencils that is even more magical.
Did you ever think about how many books or pictures or drawings have been started just with a pencil? How many art masterpieces owe their existence to that object? The list is probably huge.

But nothing is perfect, we already know that, and pencils have a little inconvenient: their leads blunt or break and they have to be sharpened. Thanks God sharpeners exist too, otherwise the use of a pencil will be ridiculous.

I am talking about real pencils, not about the modern ones, that kind of pens on which one has to push the other side to release the lead, that need to be refilled with breakable nude leads and which even have a tiny eraser.
Those pens are useful, I can’t deny it, but they don’t offer the pleasure a real pencil gives you each time you grab it with your fingers, feeling the warmness of the wood and its almost imperceptible imperfections.

Unfortunately nowadays a pencil is almost a useless tool and thus a luxury for people who, like me, still use them. A cheap luxury that is true but a luxury none the less.
I can’t help smiling when I see my pencils properly sharpened, standing on their container on my desk, and I like making them slide on the paper, and I like sharpening them till reaching the conical point which makes them so perfect. I like watching how their shavings fall into a flat glass box I have for that purpose and I even like the shape of the shavings. I like to see how a pencil turns small with its use, becoming even more delicate and fragile.

After all those explanations, I know why I wanted to write about pencils, just to let people know that I appreciate a lot how they make our everyday life a bit easier.

Thank you “pencils” ^_***.

ALCATRAZ...

¿Has estado alguna vez en Alcatraz o mejor dicho has visitado alguna vez Alcatraz?

ALCATRAZ.

Have you ever been to Alcatraz, or at least have you ever visited Alcatraz? Me neither though sometimes I feel trapped and jailed like on the Rock.
Why do I make such a statement and why Alcatraz? Simply because the island is a nightmare; close enough to see the bay and yet far enough to escape swimming, or on a raft or anything that can float, and nowhere to hide, that is if you succeed escaping from it and reaching the open sea.

I do sometimes feel like an inmate of this worldwide famous prison, prisoner of my own existence, according to my own whishes and yet gasping for breath inside the walls of my cell.
A rocky island on San Francisco's bay, a huge building with just one pier, the sound of seagulls and the howls of the wind.
Sometimes days are so foggy and the salty smell of the sea so intense that you feel sick and lost. Sometimes, it is so cloudy and rainy but vivifying and invigorating. Sometimes, it is so stormy and frightening, that I just wish to hide under the bed, feeling tiny and useless.

Always afraid of the same question "what do you want in this life for YOU, just for YOU, only for YOU?" And you know what; there's never anything I want for ME, just for ME. I want things for my dear ones, health, happiness, love... but nothing for me.
This is really personal and private stuff and yet I have to find a way out, so trying to put it black on white may be of some help.

I am so scared to start anew that I prefer to stay on this island, cause a small raft floating on the ocean to the mercy of the inclemency of weather, in a state of levitation, watching things happen and letting myself go with the stream without any resistance frightens me to death.
Sometimes my anxiety is so strong, that I am unable to reason out, prey of panic, struggling to survive: consciously wasting the most valuable thing this world gives only once to us: Life.

I can easily guess that Alcatraz’s inmates felt the same as I do. It was probably like trespassing the threshold of Dante’s hell “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here”, or keeping in mind the famous quote: “Break the rules and you go to prison, break the prison rules and you go to Alcatraz”.
I probably broke the most important rule; don’t fool yourself, don’t be a coward.

And it is true, the worst thing one can do is to cheat one’s self, as soon or later one realizes we have to move either forward or backward.
And the beat goes on, and each day is a new ordeal, feeling like Sisyphus pushing his huge stone uphill.

SCHNOUPINE ^_***

“Merci Schnoupine !”
