LET THEM FLY

Can parents conceive a child to save another one? At first sight the answer seems obvious: of course they can. Parents can do anything in this world to save a kid’s life.
Can the conceived human being, the keeper of its brother or sister’s health, say “Stop” one day, and refuse to give more cells, or organs? Can he or she have the right to live without more surgeries?

Now, that is really a complicated question, isn’t it?
On one side we have the sick child and on the other side we have the keeper, the guardian angel. Which one deserves more respect than the other one? Which one needs more assistance?

Might this kind of situation ever happen nowadays? Specially if the keeper is not an adult and depends on the parents will?
What will a lawyer do if a twelve years old child walks into his office claiming for its kids’ rights?
How will parents react in a situation like that?
Can a human being always carry the heavy load of somebody else’s health on his or her shoulders?

Well, this is the plot of the movie “My sister’s keeper”.
The little girl is Anne and she is Kate’s guardian angel. Anne is Kate’s health pantry, Kate’s provider and she has no choice. Her aim in life is to be at her sister’s disposal.
And one day, little Anne says: “Enough” and as her parents have never listen to her young daughter’s desires, she hires a lawyer to be her voice and sues her parents. She claims for her rights on her own body and fights for her medical emancipation.

As simple as that!

That story made me think a lot about “those health slaves” because they do exist and this is not just a fiction, but papers do not mention those things, at least I have never read anything like that anywhere: this is why the movie stroke me that much.

As a matter of fact these manipulations are something quite recent and the case has probably not happened yet, but do children’s rights consider this kind of situation? I wonder and I doubt it.

Lord, this is really very painful and very complicated too.
The life of one person relies on the will of somebody else, who also has feelings and who suffers each time she or he is used… So who is right and who is wrong? “Desired or not desired, that is the question”.

Those tiny bubbles are the result of genetics manipulation with the purpose to create specific genes and thus being used when required. If you look at it that way it is really breathtaking and heart breaking.

Must our laws put limitations to some parental rights?

I think that both sides have to give their point of view, I mean that according to me, the sick kid and its keeper have to be respected and parents have to know that one day or the other, time will come to let them fly.
